English & Foreign Languages

Begin with Grammar

When you start to learn a foreign language, begin with its grammar. This is the most basic thing to learn. You can understand and convey your ideas to some degree if you know a few words. For example, in a restaurant, you say “water,” and the waiter will bring water to you. You can also use body language. Some people actually get along with foreign people using only this means of communication and they have, in a sense, very good communication skills. Of course, it is impossible to master all the languages in the world and you need to use body language when you have to communicate with people in a language you do not know. Ordinarily though, you want to communicate with foreign people through language, so you need to master its structure to understand or make yourself understood as precisely as possible.

With regard to grammar, even native speakers have to study hard to speak and write properly. You will have studied the structure of your native tongue at elementary school until you got to master writing, reading, and so on. In other words, once you master the grammar you can enjoy learning a foreign language because it is possible for you to learn it naturally.

I started to learn English in earnest in junior high school and I used only one basic textbook each year. I used to read aloud and copy sentences from the textbook over and over again, and whenever I met a new word, I consulted a dictionary. Although I did not at the time, I recommend you that you listen to a CD or recording of the textbook for listening and speaking practice. As I explained, an effective way of studying and memorizing information is to read, listen to, write, and speak the same content over and over again. So, try to use a textbook that comes with a CD. This is all that you have to make an effort to study foreign languages.
