Once you have learned the grammar, next you should get used to the language. You may use anything you like. If you like watching movies you can watch your favorite movie in this language with subtitles. Do not feel any pressure to learn the language and just enjoy it. It is natural that you will not be able to keep up with the movie in the foreign language at first, so you have to get accustomed to it little by little. After a while you will find that you have automatically gained a lot of vocabulary without making an effort.

As for me, I like watching news in English because I can learn a lot about world events, and study English at the same time. In the past, I listened to English news as background music, while reading online news so that I would get used to English sound automatically. Of course, I love manga, too. These days, video games, particularly story games are good tools to get used to foreign language. Once you have gotten used to the language you can easily enjoy it.

As the next stage, I like Pilates and yoga and I sometimes take these classes in English. I think that it is a good idea to learn something you like doing in English rather than just learning English by itself. I enjoy taking these exercise classes in English and sometimes chat with the instructors or students after these classes.

I often send or receive e-mails from foreign friends in English, which allows me to use English in my daily life, so even though I live in Japan I can improve my English and never let it get rusty. In addition, I sometimes write a diary in English, and whenever I cannot find the appropriate word or idiom I consult with dictionary or translating software.

I strongly recommend you that you practice writing down your own ideas in the language you are learning and sometimes have it checked by a native speaker. You can find your bad habits. You often have to explain what you mean to the native speaker when he or she is correcting your sentences. This allows you to practice talking in the language as well, which is much better than passive learning in ordinary foreign language classes.
