I have improved my speaking skills by not only speaking but also writing, listening, and reading. Writing is similar to speaking in that you have to compose sentences you want to say. You may find that you need to make a more correct sentence and it is a slower process when writing compared to speaking. If you can write you should be able to speak to some degree, because you know how to say things. If you can listen, you should know how to pronounce each word and idiom. When you are reading sentences in your native language you can imagine someone reading this sentence aloud. That is, you can imagine speaking while you are reading. So, if you can master writing, listening, and reading, you will be automatically able to speak well.

Of course, it is better to study something which interests you in a foreign language so that you master it automatically, rather than just studying the language on its own. Finally, you can improve your speaking skills very effectively by having speaking practice over the phone, joining a conversation club, entering a speech contest, and the like. At first it takes a long time even to compose one just sentence in the foreign language. However, as you get used to it you will be able to chat more naturally. It is particularly important to get used to speaking to improve your speaking skills.

You should take the chance to speak in front of people or talk on the phone. In these situations, you get tense so speaking will naturally be more difficult. Gradually though, your speaking skills will get much better and you will find that you can really enjoy speaking the foreign language. It is also good to practice presentation at home because you cannot practice conversation by yourself but can practice presentation to improve your speaking skills.
