Vocabulary & Pronunciation

This time, I would like to describe how I have increased vocabulary for my English as well as French and German languages. From my experience it depends on your level of the foreign language how you should increase your vocabulary.

If you are a beginner to learn the language, you should learn basic words with their pronunciation at the same time. There are a lot of online teaching videos and lessons for pronunciation. You can see mouth movements to pronounce each word, while listening to its sound and trying to say it at the same time. You should also check the meaning in your language. Usually, it is better to choose a teaching video produced by a native speaker. However, it is extremely difficult to make pronunciations like a native speaker. Therefore, it is sometimes useful to learn from non-native speakers how they have acquired pronunciation skills for the foreign language.

When you study French or German language, you have to memorize the gender of each noun. Thus, it is better always to memorize each noun together with its gender: for example, “la station” in French word or “die Nation” in German.

Next, you should study the language grammar. A grammar textbook generally includes about 1,000 basic sentences. Thus, it is effective to memorizing these sentences, which include basic vocabulary, while learning the grammar. I recommend you that you should buy a grammar textbook that contains audio, such as CD for listening and speaking training. I memorized basic sentences in a grammar textbook by reading, listening to, writing, and speaking them. For example, I often typed these sentences in Google Translate to listen to the sound each time. The four kinds of actions are governed by different nerve systems to the brain. Thus, you can effectively stimulate your brain by the four actions to memorize these sentences.

After this, you will be able to acquire more words naturally. You can choose any topic on the internet. If you are interested in history, you can search for a website to describe history in the foreign language, such as English. If it is difficult for you to read it directly, you can firstly translate the website into your language before trying to read it in the foreign language. The content is usually the same regardless of language, so you can read something that you have already understood.
