The Gap and Talent

Whatever sport you try, as a beginner, at first you will practice basic movements. Some people improve well while others do not, and I can certainly be classified in the latter category. To begin with, what do we mean by basic practice for a certain discipline? Take hip hop, one of its basic movements is “up and down”, a movement which is very similar to standing up from a seated position on a chair. I think that, fundamentally, basic movement is similar to a movement you make in your daily life – and therefore something that is easy to learn.

Advanced practice is a combination of basic techniques. That is why everyone knows the importance of basic training, but some people do not make good progress, despite regular practice. That is because basic movements are similar to movements in daily life, and these vary from person to person. The narrower the gap is between the basic practice and your daily life, the better talent you have; the wider the gap, the worse you will be. Methods like Pilates and Yoga are intended to fill the gap between movements and daily life.

This concept does not just apply to dance. For example, in school you learned addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, which are often used when shopping in daily life. After that you learned advanced combinations of these basic formulas. However, if you are poor and do not have that much money, you cannot even imagine shopping. So, you cannot imagine the basic of math nor understand further advanced formulae.

If you learn physics, you will meet unusual words and concepts that you have not come across before in your daily life. So, you cannot imagine or understand the meaning of key words from physics that you do not see in your daily life. This is the gap. That is why you need to create experiments that represent problems in your daily life and fill the gap so that you can understand physics. On the other hand, you have opportunity to watch TV about history in daily life.
